Jason Grayson Interviews Lazie J.

1-When was your band formed and why ?

Jay : I started singing while I was a  kid and formally learnt Indian Classical Music for 10 years and 2 years of Indian Classical Violin.  But it was around my 10th grade that I got myself a guitar and started learning myself figuring out chords and writing songs.  That gave me a whole new world where music was not regimented unlike in classical forms. During this time I met my friend and my partner in music Manoj who shared similar tastes and it has been 28 years of going together and combining with many great artists as a duo to create music basically in Classic Rock Genre.

2-Where does the band do most of its recording and production work?

Jay: We started recording in 1991 in a friend’s studio called SS digital in Trivandrum city India. We still use his resources as we feel home there. Sometimes we use the help of Jonathan Bruce who also doubles up as a Keyboard player for us.  He has got a great ear and helps us with the final sound. We also take help from a few mixing and mastering specialists from across the world with the advent of internet service

3 Who are your influences / favorite musicians ?

Jay :  There are many legendary Rock / Hard Rock bands who have introduced and built up the genre.  Lazie J owe its existence to them… Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Thin Lizzy, Scorpions

4-Do you perform in public? Describe those occasions? Concerts, radio, TV

Jay : Yes we do . We have been doing live since 1991 from our first show at college with our common friend Ashok and then for a long time as The Autumnleaf when we started writing and performing our own songs ..we were one of early Independent English Band  in South India who had originals in TV when we had our songs in a TV program called Rock the Road in a network called Asianet in 1995. Only big labels could do it. Also one of the earliest Independent bands to feature in the First FM station in India called Radio City .   Since 2008 we became active in Internet and that made a lot of difference to our reach .  We have had our music repeated in around 30 radios stations in different parts of the world and many Radio Shows which have great viewership in more than 100 countries. We have since then performed on major TV networks Kappa TV  Music Mojo show which has millions of viewers across the world and  Rosebowl TV India.  We have an International out fit called Lazie Bison which was visualized by myself and Canadian Rocker Evan Murray and just completed a tour here with Evan and Swedish Bassist Johan joining the Lazie J crew. We also have collaborated with many artistes across the world from US , Canada , UK etc…We have also have our song in a local language movie which will release in the near future. So yes we do all these ….and love doing it .

5-Let’s Talk about your music !!!!

Jay : Lazie J is truly into classic rock and all its sub forms. You can easily identify our genre by our songs.

Our well -wishers friends and fans sum it up for us ..they say that we have great fresh melodies wrapped in a powerful presentation .. and that has been our pitch ever since we wrote the first song.  It also helps that we have roots in Indian classical Music ..Melody is supreme here though we don’t play fusion we do get great progressions which are fresh to a western audience ..We do maintain our genre and not go into fusion which is not something new. What make us fresh is that we stick to Rock n Roll but with Indian roots at a sub conscious level …that makes it fresh …you can listen to us and see that ….Some of our friends call it tropical rock  HA.. HA..

6)-How do you feel about the internet in the music business?

Jay : Internet is the best thing to have happened to the world. It brings together a lot of like minded people across boundaries. Music came out of clutches of  big corporates because of Internet.  A band like ours would not have been known anywhere but a few cities in India if there wasn’t Internet Music Business. Today if you have good music you have radios who will air them. I still remember being asked by a record label here to make Hindi Music as only that sold in India. I did not compromise and had no options but to keep low. But once I put my song on the internet website  in 15 minutes I had a RJ confirming radio play to me …in USA….now that was a dream come true we have our songs featured in radios across countries both FM and internet Radios.  Internet has removed the blocks we had earlier to take our music to public.

7)-What are the plans for the future?

Jay :Both Lazie J and Lazie Bison are on full flow. We do have our Indian tours planned also we look forward to touring as Lazie Bison to Canada and Sweden soon .  We just have recorded a TV program of Lazie Bison in a TV show which is India’s most sought after Rock music show.  We have a great management team called Aum I Artistes who takes care of us so.  We look forward to tour and play some good music.

8)-How has your music evolved since you first began playing music?

Jay : We started as a college band and played small college gigs . But then in 1991 we formed a band called The Autumnleaf and that was basically to write and create Rock music.  We have travelled quite a lot from the college kids who wanted to make music. Though our Music though sticks to classic rock genre it has gone through various treatments based on the key personnel who collaborated with us. We have collaborated with many International artistes from across the world and host of Indian artistes. They are great artistes and have contributed immensely to my and Lazie J s music.

9) Could you briefly describe the music-making process?

Jay : The band is Myself, Jay I do Songwriting , Lyrics , and Vocals ,  Manoj on Drums / Backing Vocals, John Anthony: Lead / Rhythm Guitar.  Jayakumar: Rhythm / Lead Guitars / Backing Vocals, Rahul: Bass Guitar.  Compositions are initiated mostly by me who also writes the lyrics for them.  But then Manoj and John Anthony also come up with great tunes those are developed by the band.
