New year, new music from Ed Sheeran. Hours after the singer/songwriter released two tracks off his forthcoming third studio album, both tunes launched to the top of theĀ Billboard + Twitter Trending 140Ā chart Friday morning.
The Billboard + Twitter Trending 140 chart measures the real-time acceleration of conversation around artists and their music on Twitter.
The first track ā and the only one of the two songs that Atlantic Records is actively promoting to radio ā āShape of You,ā debuted at No. 1 on the chart at 6 a.m. ET Friday (Jan. 6), after he teased 30 seconds of the song in aĀ Snapchat filterĀ the day before. āCastle on the Hill,ā the more pop-rock of the pair, debuted at No. 2 at the same hour Friday morning. Similar to āShape,ā Sheeran previewed the song on his social media channels Thursday (Jan. 5).
Sheeran also released lyric videos for each song on YouTube, which have both surpassed 1 million global views since their release.
Sheeran initially announced the release date of the tracks on New Years Day, after postingĀ a videoĀ of him holding a sign reading āNew Music Coming Friday!!ā
Both tracks are slated to appear on his latest album Ć·, pronounced ādivide.āĀ He has yet to announce a release date for the album.
