“Baptized In Metal” marks Cody Conde’s first full-length release under his project, Aksatik. The title track is a nod to Cody’s introduction to metal through foundational bands like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden, a tribute to the feeling of being “baptized” into the genre. The album keeps those influences alive while also incorporating sounds reminiscent of Megadeth, Candlemass, and Pantera.
Cody wrote each song with a story in mind, layering instruments to fit the tone and style of each track. Starting out as a guitarist, Cody was first inspired by the riffs of Eddie Van Halen and Dimebag Darrell, shaping his early lead techniques.
This influence really stands out on tracks like ‘Intimidation Games’ and ‘Easy Street.’ On songs like ‘The Shepherd’ and ‘For My Children,’ Cody channels the vocal power of Candlemass’s Johan Längquist, uniquely blending vocal and instrumental styles.
The album’s themes cover music, the state of the world, and religion. In tracks like ‘Hell In A Handbasket’, Cody critiques societal and global issues, with lines like “You dig their asinine words with no shame” addressing the spread of misinformation, while “Mass shootings are occurring every day” reflects on the growing violence in the world.
The instrumental piece, ‘Axe Addict,’ offers a break from lyrics, letting listeners focus on Cody’s guitar work. Aksatik came from Cody’s desire to pursue his musical vision independently. After years of playing in bands and enjoying the camaraderie that comes with it, he wanted to explore what he could create on his own, without compromise.
That said, he’s still open to joining a band again someday if the right opportunity comes along.
