Interview with JoAmber
1. When and why did you start playing?
I started singing professionally when I was 9 years old. When I was 4 or 5 I used to sing on my little fisher price tape recorder for hours, singing Barney songs. I always loved to sing and knew I wanted to be a performer. When I was in the 4th or 5th grade, I used to sing for all my friends at school. One day the Rec leader at the Community Center I went to asked me to come to the office and sing for him. I did and he gave me an opportunity to sing for a grand opening event. At the event, people approached my mom and asked her if I could sing at other community events. It was like a domino effect.
2. Which famous musicians do you admire? Why?
My biggest inspiration was Selena. I loved how humble and down to Earth she seemed and made me feel like I could do it too. Some of my other favorite artists include Micheal Jackson, Britney Spears, Tupac and Rihanna. All for different reasons. I’m inspired by stage presence, music videos, ability to tell stories in their music and ability just to make songs that move me.
3. Have you been in competitions? Prizes?
I used to love entering competitions and I still do. I have 15 New Mexico Music Awards and would like to submit my music into some of the awards shows in LA. I like to enter when they have a judge panel as opposed to audience voting. Then I feel like the winners win based on talent and not a popularity contest.
4. Do You perform in public? Describe those occasions? Concerts, radio, TV?
I perform as much as I can. A lot of community events in New Mexico and Bars and Clubs in LA. I love being able to connect with people through music. It’s so much fun. I have been played on more than 10 different radio stations in the SouthWest region, some of the songs hitting number 1 most requested on radio stations request lists. I have had a few TV appearances as well. I love the opportunity to get out there and to be heard. It feels good to be recognized for the hard work that I put in.
5. Why did you choose to play this kind of music?
I kind of feel like this kind of music chose me lol. But really though, I always used to try to impress my parents, and one day as a young kid, I thought it would be really cool to impress them by learning a Spanish song, being that I didn’t speak Spanish all that well. Turns out that the market for that kind of music was really big in my home state. It’s what helped me to build a small fan base and to build a foundation.
6. Let’s talk about your music and your last work…
My latest release is a song called Nada De Ti. It is a cumbia song about moving on from a toxic relationship. I see it as a song of triumph; being able to overcome situations that drag you down. The beat is really fun to dance to as well. There is also a music video I filmed to this song in Las Vegas, Nevada and it is available on my Youtube page.
7. How do you feel about the internet in the music business?
It’s a love/hate relationship. Because everything is so readily available at the push of a button on devices we carry around with us all day, it’s almost impossible for artists to make real money on their music. So we have to come up with other means of income. I’ve heard alot of people say that we have an advantage now because of the internet because it’s easier to put our stuff out there, but you’re fighting to be seen or heard in a huge mass of people who are also fighting to be seen or heard. It’s easier to get lost in the virtual horde.
8. What are your plans for the future?
I plan to put in all the work that I can to become a touring artist. I’m always working on new material and releasing new songs and visuals. I would love the opportunity to get paid to travel and perform.
9. How has your music evolved since you first began playing music?
Well I’ve gotten a lot better at addressing a crowd. My stage confidence and assertiveness has made leaps and bounds. My music itself I feel gets better and better as I go. The quality is day and night. I feel like my early original songs sounded very amateur and now are sounding more professional and hopefully industry standard. That’s what I strive for.
10. Could you briefly describe the making music process?
I really like to start from scratch. I like to come up with an idea for a song and build the song around the idea. For some of my most recent songs, my producer was my therapist for many sessions. He sat and listened to a lot of my crazy stories and basically turned them into poetry. It’s such a great emotional release for me.
