Interview with the Artist: Brandon James… by Tim Brown

When and why did you start playing?
I fell in love with music at the age of 13. It was the creative outlet I needed to essentially give me something that made me feel special.

Which famous musicians do you admire? Why?

Luther Vandross and his amazing soulful approach to both original material and covers he adored and remade. Mariah Carey for not only dominating the pop music scene but being an amazing song writer and business woman as well.

Were you influenced by old records & tapes? Which ones?

Lol yes love the old Temptation and Gladys Knight tapes because my family would play them constantly at get togethers when I was younger.

Who are your favorite musicians? Groups? CD’s?

Luther Vandross, Mariah Carey, Destinys Child, Brandy

Have you been in competitions? Fleadh’s? Any prizes?

I participated in several choral competitions in high school and won honor superior for a classical solo I did senior year of high school.

Do you perform in public? 
Describe those occasions? Concerts, radio, TV
I do I Perform often with my band. I have just about performed at every venue in Chicago and host my own showcase called Soulful Sunday every first Sunday of the month at Reggie’s Music Joint.

What makes this kind of music “good” to you?

R&B Soul in’s my roots and what moves me nothing ca be more special than that.

Why did you choose to play this kind of music?

Same reasons from the last question I wanted to perform the music that’s the most honest to me.

Let’s Talk about your music and your last work…

My latest Single is called “There She Goes” it’s bright uplifting song that story’s a women’s journey through the arts and life and how I connect to that path as well.

How do you feel about the internet in the music business?

It’s almost one and the same honestly lol. You have to be super present online to make and maintain success in the music game it seems.

What are the plans for the future?

A nationwide tour and a new EP to start!!

How has your music evolved since you first began playing music?

Better connection to my artistry and message as well as continued mastery of my voice and stage show!

Could you briefly describe the music-making process? 

I hear the music or chords , the move me to melody and mood
The melody and mood moves me to lyrics!
