Mercy was born the fifth child of seven children in Eastern Nigeria, to Dr. Matthew and Bernadette Alu. She is from Afikpo in Ebonyi State and attended Bishop Lasbrey Girls secondary school, as well as Ikenegbu primary school in Owerri, Imo State. As a child, she enjoyed singing while helping her parents on the farm or fetching water. She also sang beginning in primary school, at school events, church programs and performing choirs, and many other hosted events. She also enjoyed composing songs. Her father was a lecturer who worked his way up gradually in his career but infused the importance of education in his children. Due to this influence, she studied in fields of interest and eventually traveled to the United States to further her education.
Ngozi’s music is inspired by her love for culture, history, and her experiences in her humble beginnings. Some of her favorite old-school African classic singers who may have influenced aspects of her musical style are Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Brenda Fassie, Onyeka Onwenu. The soulfulness of her vocal style is born out of many losses and challenges along her path, yet she sees the beauty and potential of youth both on the African continent and on a global scale.
