A “True-School” traditionalist turned revolutionary, GEM&i delivers thought-provoking wordsmithery with nostalgic rhythms and fresh melodies that manifest a familiar vibe like no other. A Los Angeles native, GEM&i, AKA Blahzay, is a renowned lyricist and MC turned singer-songwriter/producer. He describes himself as a “symptom” of the conscious hip-hop era. GEM&i first emerged onto the music scene in 2004 at 16, as 1/4 of the underground HIP HOP group The Sophisticats.
GEM’s nostalgic, one-of-a-kind sound is attributed to his unique perspective and professional upbringing as a New-School lyricist who drew most of his inspiration from the east coast roots of Hip Hop, knowledge bestowed upon him by “the Teacher”, KRS-ONE.
GEM’s influences include SUBLIME, Rage Against the Machine, The Wu-Tang Clan, Rakim, KRS ONE, NAS, BlackStar, Common Sense, GangStar, DR. DRE, Eminem, Outkast, Dilated Peoples, DJ Premier, J Dilla, 9th Wonder and the like. While his more modern influences include Bruno Mars, J-Cole, Imagine Dragons, Glass Animals, Black Keys, and 21 Pilots.
You won’t catch this Gemini working on any one genre for very long. You may find him releasing a trap song one day, an EDM song another day, or a Motown-inspired track the next day. However, his works’ common themes are PEACE, LOVE, UNITY, and HAVING FUN.
